PS

I should have thought to include pictures of the clues....

the one to the left is a rather dark image of the hole in the bottom of my backpack...you might be able to make out two smaller holes also, one on either side....

and the one on the right is, of course, the can of Off spray with the blue sticky substance in view at the top and bottom of the can.

I don't know if the poor quality of these pictures is the result of an inferior camera or the inadequate skills of the user...but I'm blaming it on the camera. :)

Hey, Sandi - If I had been able to read the blog sooner, I'd have told you to look for Alewife LB in Cambridge, one of my sibs' boxes.

That Off! is spooky stuff!

This might be obvious, but I think I should have mentioned that the picture of the hole in the bottom of my backpack was taken from inside the backpack, and that's light shining through it. It's actually worse than I thought...I didn't realize the bottom layer of material was so thinned.

Jenny, I just printed the clue but I don't know if I'll be able to get to Cambridge...our hotel is downtown and parking is at a minimum, so we might have to leave the car parked the whole time we're there to make sure we don't lose a space. I'll try to find out if I can get there by public transportation...in the meantime, could you check with your sib to see if the box is still there? The last find date was in January. I'll e-mail you my cell phone #...if you have time to call and let me know the box's status, that would be great.

Sorry to be overloading the comments section...but I had to thank Jenny for the great idea you gave me when you said Off is spooky stuff! There's a LB gathering next month and we have to have a traveler that answers the question, "What are you afraid of?" I think I'll carve a can of Off! :)

Sandi -
You can get to Cambridge on The T but I don't remember which line it is. It's a great place to spend some time. I'll try to reach my sis but she's often not quick to reply. Have a great time!

Pretty sure Cambridge is on the red line...depending on where the box is you could get off at Kenmore Square. I love Beantown! You can get anywhere FAST, no car needed! I'm sure you already have your whole outing planned, but one of my favorite things to do in Boston (and its a little wierd, but thats what I am, so...) is to ride the blue line all the way to the end in Wonderland. You can hop off and walk to this crusty little fish and chips shack on Revere Beach with good eats. I think its called Patrick's. If you go at night you won't notice that Revere Beach isn't the cleanest of all beaches, but you will be able to hear the surf and see the lights of Boston Harbor all lit up. Its a cool spot...it would be a great place for a box!

Regarding the wickedly toxic state of your backpack, I think you're on the right path. A lot of bug sprays have a nasty tendency to melt/disolve plastics. Sounds as if you're dealing with a nasty case of chemicaly melted matter, that is kind of in the form of something resembling liquid latex. I'd call in a hazmat team. Hey! There's a stamp. Guys in white suits and masks attempting to pick-up a backpack with long poles.

We came home from Boston this afternoon and I was anxious to check the condition of my backpack after leaving it out to dry while we were gone...I'm sorry to report I had to trash it. The material around the holes is still gummy after scrubbing it within an inch of its life before we left. I won't be storing Off in my backpack any more. :)

On the bright side, Boston is awesome!!! Didn't find any letterboxes, as the areas I was looking in were too busy and too risky, but I was having such a great time I didn't even mind. If any of you come to Maine for a gathering, you should definitely take a side trip to Beantown.
